In a large frying pan, cook mini beef patties for 8–10 minutes, flipping halfway, or until cooked through.
Meanwhile, to make the alien eyes, slice down the length of a black olive, being careful not to cut all the way through – the aim here is you want to create an opening or be able to ‘butterfly’ it open. Carefully place a green cocktail onion inside, then skewer together with a toothpick (see the video for what it should look like). Repeat so you have 16 eyeball skewers in total (you’ll need two for each mini burger).
To construct the mini burger, slice a burger bun in half and lightly toast. Squeeze a generous amount of tomato ketchup onto both halves, then top the bottom half with some butter lettuce. Add a cooked burger patty on top.
To make the cheese teeth, take a slice of cheese and, using a sharp knife, cut in half diagonally. On the longest edge, cut a zig-zag pattern to create a ‘teeth’ effect. Add to the mini burger, along with a slice of pickle as the tongue.
Finish off the mini burger by topping with the other half of the bun. Insert two eyeball skewers into the top of the burger. Repeat decoration process with remaining ingredients, then serve.
Here at Marion’s Kitchen we are BIG believers in mini food, so these mini burgers are a definite fave. Personally, I think mini burgers are perfect for every occasion – there’s nothing like handheld food to bring a crowd together.
BUT if you’re after specifics, these make a perfect party treat – such as to celebrate Halloween or for a kids’ alien- or monster-themed birthday party. They also make great appetisers or snack on game night with your mates. Or why not try them as the perfect picnic recipe if you’re after something a little different.
If you’re wanting to bring mini burgers to your next party or event, but you’re wanting to call them something a bit more fancy than just ‘mini burgers’, there is a bit more of a grown up name for them!
Mini burgers are also commonly referred to as sliders, so if you’re on the hunt for mini burger buns try checking out slider buns at your local grocery store.
If you can’t find small enough patties for your mini burger adventures, you can totally use regular size pre-made patties and break them up into smaller sections!
If you’re going to go down that route for your mini burgers, simply buy your full size pre-made beef patties, tear ’em in half (or in thirds if you’re after a super mini, mini burger), roll them into a ball, squish them flat and cook! Super simple!
You can of course also make your mini burger patties from scratch, if you’re feeling extra inspired.
